The destination of one of the driving tours offered during the recent Treffen at the American Club was Door County. It proved to be the most popular tour of the six offered. For this reason, and because it’s been five years since the Milwaukee region visited Door County, we’re going back. The date has recently been changed to avoid a conflict with the popular multi-region BBQ. Now you can do both.
We will depart from the north side of the Milwaukee metropolitan area on Friday morning, May 13, 2022, (a week after Mother’s Day, so there’s no conflict there). We will drive I-43 to Kohler, from where we will follow the Door County Treffen Tour route along the Lake Michigan shoreline. We’ll wind our way northward to Sturgeon Bay, where we will have an on-your-own group lunch at Stone Harbor Resort. Afterwards, we’ll drive more scenic miles on twisty roads along Door County’s Lake Michigan shoreline, before crossing the peninsula to reach Ephraim’s Eagle Harbor Inn, for a two-night stay. A block of rooms is being held for our group until our deadline: March 13, 2022. Any rooms not reserved by our group by then will revert back into the pool of rooms that can be reserved by the general public.
There are three types of rooms available:
- Inn rooms (in the main building, where a light continental breakfast is included)
- Hilda or Hulda Rooms @ $162/night*
- Augusta Room @ $200/night*
- Two-bedroom suites @ $259/night* ($129.50/couple/night*; maximum 4 people)
- One-bedroom suites @ $201/night*
The former suite option is obviously more economical. If you have participating friends with whom you can share a suite you may want to consider the two-bedroom suite option in which one bedroom is an upper, accessed by a spiral staircase (definitely not ADA compliant). To make reservations, please call 920-854-2121 and say that you are requesting a room from the Porsche Club block.
We’re planning a private group event at Savory Spoon Cooking School in Ellison Bay for Friday evening, or perhaps both Friday and Saturday evenings, depending on demand. In school, you will take an active, hands-on, role in preparing dinner under the expert tutelage of Savory Spoon’s chefs. From a recent research visit, we can attest that the class will be a lot of fun (a great way to get to know Porsche Club friends better, and to make new ones), and that the food is delicious.
Savory Spoon requires a minimum of 10 students, and can accommodate a maximum of 16 students, each evening. Hopefully, our count will be large enough for us to offer the cooking classes both Friday and Saturday evenings, with about half attending each night. If we have a small count, the class may be offered only on Friday night. If we have more than 32 people who wish to participate in the classes, the school will be offered both nights, but, unfortunately, not all will be able to participate. We will accept cooking school reservations on a first come, first served basis. It is strongly suggested that you sign up (see below) early to avoid being disappointed. Each cooking school participant will be on their own for dinner on their off-school night.
During our class(es), we’ll be divided into small groups and each subgroup will prepare one of the several courses. For example, your group might be assigned preparation of an appetizer, or a salad, or a side dish, or an entrée, or a dessert. When all courses are completed, we’ll come together for a sit-down meal at tables. Wine will be available for purchase by the glass or bottle.
If you have friends with whom you would like to participate in a cooking class, please indicate your preference for Friday or Saturday evening. We’ll do our best to accommodate your preference.
The cost of the cooking school will be $75 per person. That cost covers the cooking class and each participant’s dinner. Participating in the cooking school is optional, but we hope you will join us. But, if you do not participate, please make your own dinner plans for both evenings. The deadline for signing up for the cooking school is the same as for the inn, March 13, 2022.
The easy step-by-step directions for signing up for the weekend are given below:
- Call the hotel (at the number given above) to reserve the room of your choice,
- Send a email to sign up for the weekend: (to firstname.lastname@example.org), provide the names of all participants, your preferred email address and the number of a cell phone that you will have with you on the tour. Also indicate if you plan to sign up for the cooking school, if you prefer Friday or Saturday evening, and if you wish to be paired up with others.
- Mail a check to cover the cost of the cooking school ($75/person, payable to PCA Milwaukee Region) if you plan to participate. Include a note with the names of the cooking school attendees covered by the check. Mail it to PCA-Milwaukee Region c/o Alan Wagner, N32W7401 Lincoln Blvd., Cedarburg, WI 53012-2263.
We are looking into the possibility of an optional mid-day tasting event at a winery, distillery, brewery, or similar venue on Saturday. Once you are signed up (see Item 2 above), you will receive further details as they develop.
To maintain the quality that we have grown to expect from a Milwaukee region tour, the event will be limited to the first 20 cars to sign up. We expect this event to sell out. Don’t be disappointed; sign up early. We hope you can join us in Door County in May.
